GUILLEM FARRES TAKES MX2 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD WITH TRIUMPH HOME GP VICTORY ABOARD TF 250-X
Triumph Factory Racing’s Guillem Farres has won his third Grand Prix in a row to move to the top of the FIM MX2 Motocross World Championship standings at Triumph’s home race in Foxhills, Great Britain with a stunning 1-1 victory. Teammate Camden McLellan was also on form, joining Farres on the overall podium in third.
With overall victories at the last two Grands Prix, Farres was understandably feeling confident ahead of the trip to the UK. The 12th round of the campaign saw the series return to the Foxhills track in the South West of England for the first time since the year 2000. With its hardpack, rutted surface, big jumps, and steep hills, it was clearly to the liking of Farres who kicked the weekend off with a strong second in the qualifying race aboard his TF 250-X featuring a special home race livery.
In the opening moto, Farres continued with his impressive run of form by taking the holeshot and from there, he led every lap on his way to winning his 10th race of the season. It was a similar story in the second moto, with Farres moving into the lead on lap two and after a tense, mid-race battle, he was able to spectacularly pull away to another victory. Farres’ exceptional performance sees the 23-year-old now take over at the top of the MX2 World Championship standings with seven rounds remaining.
McLellan also impressed throughout the weekend and returned to the overall podium for his efforts. Riding with a strong pace, he started well in both races and posted a 4-3 result for third overall on the day, securing another double podium for Triumph Factory Racing and the first one on British soil. Leaving Great Britain, Camden maintains fourth in the championship.
It was a weekend of celebration for Triumph, which has its headquarters in Hinckley, just a two-hour drive from the circuit. With 1-1 finishes for Farres, who took home the red plate, and a fourth double podium for the team this season in front of the British manufacturer’s home crowd in only its third year of motocross competition it was undoubtedly a special moment for the team and everyone involved with the project. Triumph has now taken 15 podium finishes including five Grand Prix victories this season so far, with a Triumph rider on the podium at all except one of the 12 events.
The Triumph Factory Racing team return to action next weekend at the MXGP of Czech Republic, followed by the MXGP of Flanders one week later.
Guillem Farres
“Sunday at Foxhills was a really good day. In the first moto, I got the holeshot and led every lap for the win. The second moto was another good race. I started second, moved into the lead quite early after the rider in front had a small crash, and then Simon Längenfelder and I put on a good battle with a few passes between us. In the end, I was able to come out on top and win the race. I have total confidence in the bike and I’ve not made any changes to it for quite some time. It’s of course really special to win at Triumph’s home Grand Prix too for my third win in a row, and hopefully we can keep this momentum going over the next few rounds.”
Camden McLellan
“Foxhills is done, and overall it was a pretty positive weekend. There were some good things to take away, especially with the starts, and my riding wasn't too bad either. The second moto was particularly strong, so now we need to understand what changed between the first and second motos and carry that momentum into the remaining races this season.”
Vincent Bereni – Triumph Factory Racing Team Manager
“This was a new track for everyone. It was very technical and challenging, but overall we had a really good weekend. Saturday was positive for both riders. Guillem had a strong qualifying race although he was a little unfortunate to make a mistake on the final lap. In the end, though, it was probably a good reset and helped him refocus for Sunday. The Grand Prix races went really well. Guillem won again, while Camden finished fourth and third for third overall. I think we showed how important it is to have Camden back fighting at the front, while Guillem continues to build on his momentum. Both riders delivered this weekend, so we're very happy with their performances. Now Guillem is leading the championship, but we've been in this position before with Camden, so there's no reason to get carried away. It's nice to have the red plate, but the championship is still long. We have to stay focused, keep working hard, and keep our minds on the job.”
Ian Kimber – Head of Global Racing Programmes, Triumph Motorcycles
“To be here with the team, to stand with them and watch our two riders on the podium at Triumph’s home GP is something really special. It really hits home how hard the entire programme has worked over the last two and a half years to be in this position. To come from just a concept to where are today, having led the championship with both riders at points this season, and now with Farres taking the red plate with a third GP win in a row is absolutely incredible. It wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in bringing together what we do. Guillem, to have delivered what he did, especially under pressure in the second moto where he pulled away to take another spectacular win, shows what a world class rider he is. Camden also has been putting on a good fight, and showed his never-give-up attitude to finish on the podium. It’s been a truly special weekend, and the team have done an incredible job.”
